Martinez

Ingredients

  • 45 ml Old Tom gin
  • 45 ml Sweet vermouth e.g. Carpano Antica, Cocchi di Torino
  • 5 ml Maraschino liqueur e.g. Luxardo
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish Orange peel

Preparation

  1. Stir all ingredients with ice.
  2. Strain into a Nick & Nora glass. Don't know how? Pour the drink through a strainer (or the built-in strainer on your shaker) to catch the ice and any solids.
  3. Garnish with orange peel. Use a peeler or knife to cut a wide strip, avoiding the white pith. Twist it over the drink to release the oils, then drop it in.

Origin Story

The Martinez cocktail is considered a precursor to the modern Martini, emerging in the mid-19th century. Its origins are often debated, with claims of its creation in either San Francisco or Martinez, California, reflecting the early cocktail culture of the time.
