Old Fashioned

Ingredients

  • 60 ml Bourbon e.g. Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve
  • 1 piece Sugar cube
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 barspoon Water
  • Garnish Orange peel

Preparation

  1. Muddle sugar cube with bitters and water.
  2. Add bourbon and ice.
  3. Stir until chilled.
  4. Garnish with orange peel. Use a peeler or knife to cut a wide strip, avoiding the white pith. Twist it over the drink to release the oils, then drop it in.

Origin Story

The Old Fashioned originated in the early 19th century, primarily in the United States, as a simple whiskey cocktail that emphasized the spirit itself. It gained popularity as a classic drink among gentlemen in the 1880s, often ordered as a 'whiskey cocktail' before evolving into its current name.
