Penicillin Variation with Rye

Ingredients

  • 60 ml Bourbon e.g. Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve
  • 22.5 ml Lemon juice
  • 15 ml Sugar syrup
  • 1 piece Egg white
  • 15 ml Red wine

Preparation

  1. Dry shake bourbon, lemon, syrup and egg white.
  2. Shake with ice.
  3. Strain into a rocks glass over ice. Don't know how? Pour the drink through a strainer (or the built-in strainer on your shaker) to catch the ice and any solids.
  4. Float red wine on top. Don't know how? Pour slowly over the back of a bar spoon held just above the surface so the liquid sits on top rather than mixing in.

Origin Story

The New York Sour is believed to have emerged in the mid-19th century, evolving from the classic whiskey sour by adding a layer of red wine on top. This cocktail reflects the trend of mixing different spirits and flavors that characterized the cocktail culture of New York City.
