New York Sour (Classic)

Ingredients

  • 60 ml Rye whiskey e.g. Rittenhouse, Bulleit Rye, Old Overholt
  • 22.5 ml Lemon juice
  • 15 ml Sugar syrup
  • 15 ml Red wine
  • Garnish Cherry, lemon wheel

Preparation

  1. Shake whiskey, lemon and syrup with ice.
  2. Strain into a rocks glass over ice. Don't know how? Pour the drink through a strainer (or the built-in strainer on your shaker) to catch the ice and any solids.
  3. Carefully float red wine on top. Don't know how? Pour slowly over the back of a bar spoon held just above the surface so the liquid sits on top rather than mixing in.
  4. Garnish with cherry, lemon wheel. A wheel is a thin, round cross-section slice of the whole fruit.

Origin Story

The New York Sour is a classic cocktail that dates back to the 19th century, evolving from the traditional sour family of drinks. It gained fame as a refreshing option in bars across New York, particularly during the cocktail renaissance of the late 1800s.
