Blood and Sand

Ingredients

  • 22.5 ml Blended Scotch e.g. Johnnie Walker, Famous Grouse
  • 22.5 ml Cherry Heering
  • 22.5 ml Sweet vermouth e.g. Carpano Antica, Cocchi di Torino
  • 22.5 ml Orange juice
  • Garnish Orange peel

Preparation

  1. Shake all ingredients with ice.
  2. Strain into a chilled coupe glass. Don't know how? Pour the drink through a strainer (or the built-in strainer on your shaker) to catch the ice and any solids.
  3. Garnish with orange peel. Use a peeler or knife to cut a wide strip, avoiding the white pith. Twist it over the drink to release the oils, then drop it in.

Origin Story

The Blood and Sand cocktail is believed to have originated in the early 20th century, named after a 1922 film featuring Rudolph Valentino. It combines Scotch whisky with sweet vermouth and orange juice, reflecting the era's cocktail experimentation.
